READING IS FUNDAMENTAL (RIF) at Whitney was a success today!
RIF is the largest and oldest nonprofit literacy organization in the country. At each RIF distribution day (twice each school year), children have an opportunity to choose a new paperback book to call their own.
Though most of the National RIF funding is provided by Federal grants, the money to buy books for our RIF comes entirely from our local community, particularly from the Anacortes Noon Kiwanis, the Kiwanis Sunrisers, Soroptimist International of Anacortes, Soroptimist International of Fidalgo Island, the Anacortes Noon Rotary, Fidalgo Island Rotary, Friends of the Anacortes Public Library, and the school PTAs. The budget is around $6000 per year to provide approximately 2700 free books.
Today RIF gave 157 books to Whitney Students enrolled in Kindergarten, Pre-K, and YMCA programs.
We’d like to thank all of our guest speakers who read to the Whitney classes today. Thank you to Mayor Laurie Gere, Librarian Leslie Wilson, Dr. Cindy Elliser of Pacmam, Whitney Co-PTA President Cherree Abbott, Firefighter Eli Hudson, & Anacortes Police Officer Karl Wolfswinkel.
A special thank you to Cheryl Neuwirth for organizing this amazing event and to Kristi Guinn and Alexis Weise for being such a huge help today.
